Noughts and Crosses
Thursday. 11.8.07 9:42 am
Noughts and Crosses written by Malorie Blackman is possibly one of the best books I have ever read. It's a trilogy series (possibly about to become a series of four XD2), and I loved each in the series, but the first was definately my favourite.

The book is about an alternative universe to ours, where the stereotype of racism has been reversed. It has a Romeo and Juliet storyline, with undercurrents of political struggles, and an exploration of terrorist campaigns. In the world of Noughts and Crosses, it is the white people (noughts) who are the second class citizens, and the blacks (crosses) who are the 'superior race'. It is in this seting that Callum (a nought) and Sephy (a cross) grow up. They spend their childhood together and we see the difficulties each face, Callum as the subject of predjudice, and Sephy struggling with her broken family and the problems which come of being friends with a nought. Malorie Blackman takes the reader through the lives of Callum and Sephy, and those closest to them, showing their developing love for each other, the tragedies which shake their lives, and the never ending obstacles put between them. Through Callum's difficulties in being a nought, and the discrimination against him, Malorie Blackman depicts the hardships of black people in america in an entirely new way. You get drawn into these characters, you are happy when they find hope, you rage against the injustice against them, and in the wake of the eventual tragedy which rips them apart, you cry for them.

This is an amazing novel. I can't recommend it enough.
The Royal Shakespeare Company is putting on a production of the trilogy and I have already gotten people telling me how good it was. If you live in england, and are interested in this novel, or have read it before, then get your tickets from this site:
